On Friday, July 29, 2005, over 100 citizens of Desa Nikkel (the village around Inco's mines and smelter in Indonesia) and former Inco employees (members of the Indonesian Workers' Union (SPBI)) held an action in front of the Inco Sorowako Golf Club. Twelve Inco foreign employees and several vehicles were taken hostage for 3 hours by citizens. The citizen raid ended when Inco management promised to make their representatives available for a meeting. The citizens are demanding that Inco immediately meet with them to resolve a decades old land compensation issue. Meanwhile, some 250 former Inco employees are demanding that Inco immediately deal with a worker severance issue and comply with labour regulations. At the time of this news report (Sat, July 30), the meeting was still in progress.
